Muscadine Grapes and Resveratrol
Want to know a secret? Not all superfruits come from exotic far off places. We all know about Acai from the Amazon Rainforest, Noni from the Pacific Islands – but what about an incredible grape that grows in North Carolina and Georgia? Yes, we are talking about the Muscadine Grape.
Muscadine Grapes have an extra chromsome (compared to other grapes) and this is the reason they have incredible health properties. While Resveratrol is found in all red grapes – the Muscadine grape has over 6 times the amount of Resveratrol found in red grapes.
Throughout this blog we will be discussing the science and testing that has been done on both muscadine grape skins and seeds (both skin and seed have strong health properties). In addition, we will be looking at all the current research and clinical studies done on Resveratrol (and Trans-Resveratrol).
These are exciting times when it comes to health living and anti-aging – stay tuned for most posts to follow!

Lately we have been receiving a slew of emails on how to find the best resveratrol supplement. We obviously believe that a great resveratrol supplement needs to have Muscadine Grapes in the formula, but there is much more to it than just muscadines. In this article we will provide some questions you can ask to help you find the best resveratrol supplements.
Want the Best Resveratrol Supplement – Ask the Right Questions
If you want a resveratrol supplement that is going to be effective and free of side effects, you need to ask the right questions. Here is our quick list -
1. Is it Made with 99% Pure Trans-Resveratrol?
There is Trans-Resveratrol and Cis-Resveratrol. Then there is 50%, 75%, 98% and 99% Resveratrol. Yes, all these terms can be VERY confusing. In the end, you simply want to find a formula that is made only with 99% Pure Trans-Resveratrol. Resveratrol supplements that are NOT made with 99% Pure Trans-Resveratrol can have Emodin – a nasty little substance that can cause side effects.
If you are interested in learning more about all the different forms of resveratrol – here is a great article.
2. Are Any fillers or Flowing Agents Used in the Formula?
You are looking to take resveratrol, not a bunch of inactive ingredients that are used as fillers or flowing agents. Look at the “Other Ingredients” in the Supplement Facts panel. You do NOT want to see things like: magnesium stearate, silica, rice or anything else. You want to find a Resveratrol supplement that is really just Resveratrol.
3. Do they Clearly List the Amount of 99% Trans-Resveratrol on the Label?
By looking at the Supplement Facts panel you should be able to clearly see exactly how much 99% Trans-Resveratrol you are getting per serving. You do NOT want to see “Proprietary Blends” – this just makes it impossible to know how much 99% Trans-Resveratrol you are getting. In addition, you want to see at least 175mg of 99% Pure Trans-Resveratrol per serving.

More questions from our readers…
“Hi – I was looking at Muscadine Grape supplement in the store and in the other ingredients they have Magnesium Stearate. What is this?”
Great question! No – you definitely do NOT want magnesium stearate in your muscadines. Magnesium stearate is a flowing agent that is often added to supplements. Magnesium stearate has absolutely no benefits to the end user. The only benefit is to the manufacturer – who can produce capsules faster if they use the magnesium stearate.
Are there Any Negatives to Mixing Muscadine Grapes and Magnesium Stearate?
There can be. Magnesium stearate can be made from saturated animal fat – not exactly what you want in your diet. It can also be made from corn or soy – which is probably Genetically Modified – again not what you want in your muscadine supplement.
Our friends at PowerSupplements.Com have a great article on Magnesium Stearate -

We have been receiving a lot of questions on muscadines over the last few weeks and we love it! Keep the questions coming in – we want to know what is on your mind.
One of the common questions we get is – “Why Are Muscadine Grapes Better Than Red Grapes?” This is a great question, so let’s dig a little deeper…
Muscadine Grapes – A Red Grape And So Much More
Red Grapes are terrific – a nice source of resveratrol and countless other polyphenols. In short, Red Grapes are a terrific fruit with strong health properties. However, what if you could eat a grape that had everything that Red grapes have – plus so much more? The Muscadine Grape is that grape. Muscadines have all the polyphenols that red grapes have, plus the following…
- 40x The Antioxidants of Red Grapes
- 6x the Resveratrol of Red Grapes
- More Fiber than Oat Bran
- The Only Grape to have Ellagic Acid
So, the question is not what is wrong with red grapes, rather it is what is so right with muscadine grapes! There is a similar situation with the acai berry as compared to blueberries. Again, blueberries are great, but Acai has so much more than blueberries.
Make Sure You Get the Right Muscadine Grapes!
If you want to try muscadines, you want to make sure you find a product that is made with the whole muscadine fruit – muscadine seed, muscadine pulp and muscadine skin. You also want to make sure that the muscadine grapes have not been treated with pesticides.
We have found that the Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol is the best source of muscadine grapes on the market. Even if you are not interested in their product – check out the muscadine articles on their site – it is the best research we have seen on muscadine grapes and resveratrol.
